Bandaje Trek Trail Information

The Bandaje Falls Trek is one of the most scenic treks in Karnataka, offering a perfect combination of rolling grasslands, mountain ridges, ancient fort ruins, and breathtaking waterfall views. Starting near the famous Rani Jhari Viewpoint, this trek takes you through the beautiful Western Ghats and ends at the stunning Bandaje Falls viewpoint.

Section 1: Bandaje Trek Checkpost to Ballalarayana Durga Fort

The Bandaje Falls Trek starts after the Bandaje checkpost. The initial trail passes through peaceful coffee estates surrounded by dense greenery and later enters thick forest sections filled with tall trees and fresh mountain air.

This section acts as a warm-up for trekkers, with easy and comfortable trails through forest patches that gradually open into wide grasslands. The trail is simple and moderately easy, making it suitable even for beginners.

As you move further ahead, the landscape becomes more scenic with stunning Western Ghats views, cool mountain breeze, and endless green meadows stretching across the hills.

After trekking through the grasslands, trekkers will reach the historic Ballalarayana Durga Fort, one of the major highlights of the trek. The ancient fort ruins offer breathtaking panoramic views of surrounding valleys, hills, and forests.

Section 2: Ballalarayana Durga Fort to Bandaje Falls Viewpoint

After crossing Ballalarayana Durga Fort, the trek becomes more scenic and adventurous. The trail continues through rolling grasslands, mountain ridges, and open meadows with breathtaking valley views throughout the route.

This section is mostly open and exposed to sunlight, allowing trekkers to enjoy panoramic views of nearby hill ranges, Charmadi Ghat, and the surrounding Western Ghats landscapes.

As you continue trekking, you will come across beautiful cascading grassland viewpoints that make this section one of the most photogenic parts of the Bandaje Trek.

Closer to the waterfall viewpoint, the trail becomes narrower and slightly more challenging. The final stretch includes steep grassy slopes that can become slippery during monsoon and post-monsoon seasons. At the end of the trail, trekkers are rewarded with spectacular views of Bandaje Falls cascading from more than 200 feet into a deep forest valley below. The massive waterfall, surrounded by lush greenery and mist-covered cliffs, creates one of the most breathtaking trekking landscapes in Karnataka.

Note: Trekkers should stay away from cliff edges near the Bandaje Falls viewpoint, especially during windy or misty weather conditions, as the drop is extremely steep and dangerous.

Descent:

Trekkers return via the same route back to the starting point. During descent, extra caution is required on slippery grasslands, rocky sections, and steep trails, especially during the monsoon season.

Best Time to Do the Bandaje Falls Trek

The best time to trek to Bandaje Falls is from June to February, when the Western Ghats are at their most beautiful. Each season offers a different experience:

  • Monsoon Season: The Bandaje Falls trek receives heavy rainfall, turning the entire trail lush, green, and misty. It’s the best time for those who love monsoon treks, waterfalls, and cloud-covered mountains. However, the trail can be slippery, so carrying proper rain gear and trekking shoes is important.
  • Post-Monsoon & Winter: This is the most recommended time for the Bandaje Falls Trek. The weather is pleasant, the forests stay green, and the grasslands open up to clear mountain views, perfect for photography and sunrise lovers. Water streams and waterfalls still flow beautifully during this time.

How to Reach Bandaje Falls Trek Base Camp

The Bandaje Falls Trek starts in a village called Sunkasale, located near Charmadi Ghat in Karnataka. Sunkasale is the main access point for trekkers heading to the Bandaje Falls Trek trail and forest entry point.

This is the most convenient way to reach the Bandaje Falls Trek starting point. From Kottigehara, take a local bus or auto to Sunkasale, the nearest village to the trek base camp. Trekkers commonly use local jeeps from Sunkasale to the Bandaje Trek starting point. The jeep cost may vary depending on the season and group size, which makes it budget-friendly for groups

If you are planning via train: The nearest railway stations for the Bandaje Falls Trek are Mangalore Junction Railway Station (110 km) and Udupi Railway Station (95 km). From either station, take a bus or local taxi to reach Sunkasale. From there, local buses, autos, and jeeps are easily available to reach the Bandaje Falls Trek base point.
