Makalidurga Trek: My First Trek Experience with My Daughter & goChaarana

On January 10, 2026 by admin

My name is Lakshmi Hegde, and I work as a software engineer. Trekking has always been my escape from the fast-paced routine of work. Nature serves as my mental reset whenever I feel mentally exhausted. Over the years, I’ve explored several beautiful trekking trails around Bangalore, and each trek has given me memories to cherish.

This time, however, the Makalidurga Trek held extra special significance.

It wasn’t just another weekend trip; it was my daughter’s first trek.

For that reason, I was looking for something easy, safe, scenic, and beginner-friendly, with rewarding views at the top. After some research, Makalidurga felt like the perfect choice.

Choosing goChaarana—A Leap of Trust

While browsing Makalidurga trek options on BookMyShow, I came across goChaarana. Curious, I searched for them on Google and Instagram. They didn’t have a huge number of reviews or followers, which honestly made me a bit unsure.

My previous trekking experience with another organizer had not been great—
poor transport arrangements, unorganized management, and just one trek leader managing 25 trekkers.

Since my daughter was accompanying me on this occasion, I preferred to avoid taking any unnecessary risks.

I decided to contact goChaarana to address my concerns. Anand, the coordinator, patiently answered all my questions and explained everything clearly. There was something reassuring and genuine about the way they communicated.

After thinking it through, I decided to trust them and booked the trek.

Looking back now, I can confidently say it turned out to be one of the best trekking experiences I’ve ever had.

My Trek Journey with goChaarana

A day before the trek, the goChaarana team shared all the important details—pickup points, timings, instructions, and a checklist of things to carry.

Our pickup point was Banashankari at 12:00 AM, so I reached by 11:50 PM. A few minutes later, the trek lead called to inform us that the vehicle was on its way.

Within 15 minutes, the tempo traveler arrived, and after picking up everyone from different locations, we began our journey toward Makalidurga.

We were a small group of 12 trekkers, and the vibe felt warm and friendly from the start.

Ice-Breaker & Briefing Session

During the journey, we stopped for a short tea break. The trek lead conducted an ice-breaking session where everyone introduced themselves and shared a few light moments.

The trek captain made sure everyone felt comfortable, especially first-time trekkers. The positive energy within the group made the journey even more enjoyable.

After the briefing, we continued toward the base camp.

Reaching the Base Camp

Around 4:00 AM, we reached the Makalidurga base camp. We rested for a while, freshened up, and prepared ourselves for the climb.

At 5:00 AM, just before sunrise, the trek lead gave us safety instructions, and we began our trek.

The Makalidurga Trek Trail Experience

Base Camp to Forest Checkpost

The trek started in the parking area. After walking about 200 meters, we crossed the railway track, which is one of the most unique highlights of this trek.

Soon after, we reached the forest checkpost, where the forest officer verified our entry tickets.

Checkpost to First Viewpoint

Within the first 100 meters, we spotted the Muthurayaswamy Temple on the right. The trail ahead was muddy but simple to follow.

At the first deviation, we took the right trail toward Makalidurga, guided by arrow marks and paint markings on rocks.

As we climbed higher, the trail became rocky, with greenery on both sides. The cool breeze and soft morning light made the trek refreshing.

Soon, the landscape opened up to reveal the stunning Gundamagere Lake, shaped like South America. We paused for a moment to admire the view.

The final climb to the first viewpoint involved a steep granite rock. Using natural boulders for support, everyone reached the top safely.

We rested here, clicked photos, enjoyed snacks, and watched the beautiful sunrise unfold.

First Viewpoint to Makalidurga Peak

After a short break, we continued toward the summit. This section was slightly steeper, but the trek lead guided everyone patiently.

Ancient fort walls welcomed us near the top, reminding us of Makalidurga’s historical importance. From here, the panoramic views of rolling hills and the deep-blue Gundamagere Lake were breathtaking.

The Makali Malleshwara Temple, which is dedicated to Lord Shiva, was a few steps ahead. There was a beautiful Nandi statue at the entrance. Surrounded by old fort ruins, the place felt peaceful and spiritual.

We spent some time exploring the fort, relaxing, and enjoying the calm atmosphere at the summit.

Descent & Return Journey

We descended using the same trail, following the clearly marked paint signs. With the guidance of our trek leader, the descent felt safe and comfortable.

The quiet hills, golden morning light, and sense of accomplishment made the descent just as enjoyable as the climb.

On our way back, we stopped for a delicious South Indian breakfast, which was the perfect ending to the trek.

We reached Bangalore by 12:00 PM, feeling refreshed, happy, and fulfilled.
